NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE CUMMINS DIESEL ENGINE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BUILT BEFORE MDH 10-28-XX
Harsh or delayed transmission upshift in all gears, poor part throttle engine performance when engine is at full operating temperature.
Using the Scan Tool (DRB II) and appropriate diagnostic procedure manual or the Mopar Diagnostic System, verify that all vehicle engine systems are functioning as designed. If Trouble Codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) are present, record them on the repair order for future reference, and repair as necessary. If no codes are present and all systems are functioning correctly, proceed with the following repair.
1 4773897 Package - Throttle Lever and Rod Package consists of:
1 4773482 Throttle Control Lever
1 4773483 Throttle Control Rod Assembly
This repair involves replacing the engine throttle control lever and throttle control rod assembly. It also provides a revised adjustment procedure for the throttle position sensor and transmission throttle valve cable adjustment.
1. Remove the existing throttle control rod assembly by unsnapping the rod at both front and rear ball sockets (Figure 1).
2. Remove the 2 attaching screws that retain the throttle control lever. Remove the throttle control lever and throttle return spring (Figure 1).
3. Install throttle control rod assembly, P/N 4773482, to the lever, P/N 4773483. Install the adjustable link end of the rod on the lever (Figure 2).
Note: The throttle control rod comes pre-assembled and should measure 348.1 mm (center of ball to center of ball). Adjust the rod length as required.
4. Install the new throttle control lever/rod to the engine and secure with the two screws removed in step 2. Install the throttle return spring and complete the installation of the throttle control rod.
5. Measure the distance from the rear face of the bracket to center of ball. Lengthen or shorten the throttle control rod to provide a dimension of 126.5 +/- 1.0 mm (Figure 3).
6. Adjust the throttle position sensor. This can be accomplished by using the volt meter feature on the DRB II (Scan Tool) or using a digital volt meter.
A) Attach a paper clip into the center terminal of the TPS electrical connector. Do not remove the connector from the TPS.
B) Attach the positive lead of the voltmeter to this paper clip and the negative lead to a good ground.
C) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
D) Turn the throttle rod adjusting link until a closed throttle voltage of 1.0 VDC (+/- .2 VDC). The voltage at the wide open throttle position should be 3.00 to 4.10 VDC.
If closed throttle and wide open throttle voltages are not correct, repeat the adjusting procedure and recheck. If voltages are still not correct, check for throttle cable or linkage interference and correct.
E) When TPS adjustments are complete, tighten all throttle control rod lock nuts and remove the paper clip from the TPS connector.
7. Turn the ignition switch to OFF position.
8. Disconnect the battery negative cables on both batteries for a minimum of 2 minutes, then reconnect.
NOTE: YOU MUST DISCONNECT BATTERY TO ERASE ALL ADAPTIVE VALUES STORED BY THE POWERTRAIN CONTROLLER. DO NOT USE THE DRBII (SCAN TOOL) FOR THIS PROCEDURE.
9. Adjust the transmission throttle valve control cable using the following procedure:
A) Disconnect throttle valve control cable end from the attachment stud on the throttle control lever (Figure 4).
B) Verify that the transmission throttle lever is in the fully closed position. Then be sure the lever on the fuel injection pump is at curb (closed throttle) idle position.
C) Locate the cable lock button. The button is part of the cable retainer at the engine end of cable (Figure 5).
D) Press cable lock button inward to release cable. Lock button only has to move about 2 mm (0.070 in.) to release cable in adjuster head.
E) Center cable and on attachment stud to within 1 mm (0.039 in.) and release lock button.
F) Check cable adjustment. Be sure transmission throttle lever and throttle control lever on fuel injection pump move simultaneously.
